Creative work is mythologized as a solo act, but the historical record disagrees. Almost every movement we admire began as a small group of people meeting regularly in a fixed place.
Workshops, salons and cafés
Renaissance workshops trained masters by surrounding them with apprentices and rivals. Parisian salons of the 17th and 18th centuries gathered writers, painters and philosophers in private living rooms. The Impressionists turned cafés into critique groups. None of these were content platforms. They were rooms.
The 20th-century scenes
The Bauhaus, the Beats, the Black Mountain College circle, the Harlem Renaissance, Andy Warhol's Factory, the Homebrew Computer Club, different mediums, same shape. A small number of people, a shared physical space, frequent contact and conversation that drifted between technical, emotional and philosophical.
Why this matters now
AI has scaled creative output by orders of magnitude, but it has not scaled the quality of creative conversation. That is still a local, in-person problem and a solvable one. Guilds, salons and workshops worked for centuries because they answered a need that algorithms cannot.
